    Alta Harz, 81 [unfortunately not dated] Elgin— Alta Harz, 81, of 352 N. Alfred St., Elgin, died in her home on Monday. She was born in Belvidere May 1, 1899, the daughter of August [actually Gustav] and Wilhelmina Krueger Totz. Mrs. Harz is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Henry Mahlman; her second husband, Edwin Smith; and her third husband, Alfred Harz, one son in infancy; six brothers; and six sisters. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Schmidt Funeral Home, Elgin, with the Rev. Dr. Willis A. Reed officiating at the graveside. Friends may call Thursday from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home, where memorial gifts may be made in her name to the First Baptist Church of Elgin or the charity of one's choice.

In 1899, in the year that Alta Harz was born, on February 4th, the Philippine–American War began. The Philippines objected to the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1898, that transferred possession of the Philippines from Spain to the U.S. Filipinos began a fight for independence and fighting between U.S. forces and those of the Philippine Republic broke out. On June 2nd, the Philippines officially declared war on the United States.

In 1906, at the age of merely 7 years old, Alta was alive when author Upton Sinclair exposed the public-health threat of the meat-packing industry in his book The Jungle. While his intent was to show the lives of exploited lives of immigrants in Chicago and other industrialized cities, most people were horrified by how the meat that ended up on their tables was handled. There was such an outcry that legislation was passed to regulate meat packing. Sinclair said " "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."
