Alleine Langford's History: 1888 - 1981

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Alleine was my great-aunt, (Charlotte) Mae Bebb's landlady. I visited them at 660 Fairmount Avenue in Jamestown, NY. in the 1970s. Alleine ran an antique store out of her side of the house. There was a huge elm tree in the gigantic yard. There was an old carousel horse on a pole set in a corner of the yard, and a pretty arbor at the gate. Her brother, Red was her groundskeeper. She was a nice lady. My great-aunt moved in with us in 1971. We visited Alleine in the nursing home in 1977.

On September 8th, the body of Annie Chapman was found - throat slit and disemboweled. On September 30th, Elizabeth Stride, also a prostitute in Whitechapel, was found dead from a slit throat. Within an hour, another body was discovered - Catherine Eddowes'. She was far more savagely murdered and it is thought that the Ripper had more time with her. Then, on November 9th, the body of prostitute Mary Jane Kelly was found in a boarding room in Whitechapel. Considered to be the probable fifth, and last, of Jack the Ripper's victims, Kelly's was the most savage of his murders.
