Alice May (Bales) Worsley of Caulfield, City of Glen Eira County, VIC Australia was born on May 2, 1880 in Dunolly to Martha (Edgell) Bales and Joseph William Bales. She had siblings John Lee Bales, Hannah Christina Bales, Mary Ann Bales, Sarah Ann Bales, Alfred Ernest Bales, William Joseph Bales, and James Theodore Bales. She married Edmond Annesley Worsley in 1904, and had children Harold Ansley Worsley, Leonard Hadyn Worsley, Norman Lindsay Worsley, Alison Martha Worsley, Beryl Letitia Worsley, and Nancy May Worsley. Alice Worsley died at age 78 years old on July 18, 1958 in Caulfield, and was buried at Ashes Scattered, Crematorium in Springvale, Greater Dandenong City County.

In 1898, she was 18 years old when on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
