Alice Maria (Bryant) Sawyer of Ballarat, City of Ballarat County, VIC Australia was born on August 21, 1871 in Ballarat to William Joseph Bryant and Maria Curnick Bryant. She had siblings William James Bryant, Joseph Bryant, Albert Hetherington Bryant, Emma Bryant Harris, Agnes Bryant, Eliza Bryant Smyth, Harriet Caroline Bryant, Charles Thomas Bryant, Lilly Clara (Bryant) Golden, Ada Agnes (Bryant) Tait, and Florence Ellen (Bryant) Mcgregor. She married William Henry Sawyer in 1890, and had children Irene Beatrice Sawyer, Ruby Alice Sawyer, Myrtle Isabella Sawyer, William Henry Sawyer, Isabella Nimmo Sawyer, Florence Lilian Sawyer, Annie Roberta Sawyer, Jessie Victoria Sawyer, Alma Maria Sawyer, and Beatrice May Emma Sawyer. Alice Sawyer died at age 87 years old on October 13, 1958 in Ballarat.

In 1871, in the year that Alice Maria (Bryant) Sawyer was born, on March 29th, Royal Albert Hall in London was officially opened by Queen Victoria. Construction had begun in 1867 and the hall was named after Queen Victoria's husband, who had died in 1861 - 10 years before.
Did you know?
In 1886, Alice was merely 15 years old when on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
