Alice Hoyt 1905 - 1983

Alice May (Porter) Hoyt of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida was born on December 14, 1905 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio United States, and had siblings Richard Porter and Mary Porter Utter. She was married to William Hoyt, and they were together until William's death. She had a child Jean Alison (Carson) Hoyt. Alice Hoyt died at age 77 years old in February 1983.

    Alice loved to golf, bowl, and garden. She was also presented with a lifetime membership at the Miami Country Club, as the members decided they would miss her too much were she to leave.

    Alice Hoyt passed away on February 13, 1983 from lung cancer and emphysema. She had unfortunately quit smoking too late, just a year before her death.

In 1905, in the year that Alice Hoyt was born, the first movie theater opened in the United States in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the first theater to show nothing but movies - silent films. Two men, John P. Harris and his brother-in-law Harry Davis, opened the Nickelodeon on Smithfield Street - charging 5 cents for admission. The first day, 450 people watched movies at the new theater - on the second day, more than 1500 people stood in line to get in.

In 1910, Alice was just 5 years old when the Mann Act, also called the White-Slave Traffic Act, was signed into law. Its purpose was to make it a felony to engage in interstate or foreign commerce transport of "any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose". But the language was so broad that it was also applied to consensual sex between adults when wished.
