Ada Millan (McCance) Gibson of Hotham West Australia was born in 1874 in Loddon Shire County, VIC to Mary (Greenwood) McCance and Robert Millan McCance. She had siblings Jessie Olive Agnes (McCance) Rees, William George Greenwood Mccance, Donald Millan Mccance, and Percy James Millan Mccance. She married George Gibson in 1897, and had children Jessie McLeod Gibson, Dorothy Mary Gibson, William George Mccance Gibson, and Percy Reginald Gibson. Ada Gibson died at age 70 years old in August 1945.

In 1898, at the age of 24 years old, Ada was alive when on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
