Tom Walters was the son of Thomas Edward Walters, Sr, a Baptist minister, and Virginia Irene Rodwell Walters, of Warren County, NC.
Tom E. Walters, Jr. (1930-1992) was a news and commercial photographer from 1955-1991 based in Charlotte, N.C. He received his first camera at the age of twelve, after turning a camera in to a lost and found and being given the camera when it was not claimed. His interest in photography grew during his high school and college years as he worked on student newsletters, newspapers, and the yearbook. In 1953, Walters gained employment at the Charlotte Engraving Company as a continuous tone photographer, where he learned different methods and techniques that he would later apply to his craft. He became a news photographer in 1955 through Tom Franklin's Studio, which was contracted to photograph stories for the Charlotte News as they lacked an official photography department. He entered a competition in 1957 held by the Carolina Press and Photographers Association through the Short Course at Chapel Hill, and won "Southern Photographer of the Year," an award he went on to win again in 1958. Believing that his career would benefit from a full-time position as a news photographer, Walters accepted a position with the Charlotte Observer in 1957. In 1959, he entered the 16th Annual National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Competition, and won first place in the "Portraits and Personalities" category. The recognition he gained from entering these competitions allowed him to attend the University of Missouri's workshop in photojournalism, where he honed his craft. Walters decided there was more freedom in magazine photography, and in 1961 he began "Carolina Illustrated" with Bruce Roberts, catering to businesses for advertisements and in-house publications and marking the beginning of his self-employment. In the 1970s Walters changed the name of the studio to "Tom Walters Photgraphy." His images appear in National Geographic , People, Life , Mademoiselle , Forbes , and other nationally-recognized magazines. Walters' work was the first exhibit of photographs by a single photographer at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, N.C. in 1968, and the show toured the region the following year. This exhibit influenced the development of the Light Factory, which began as a group of professional and amateur photographers (of which Walters was a member) interested in promoting photography as an art form. This idea first manifested itself as the volunteer-run "Imprints" gallery, which hosted shows, provided memberships, auctions of prints, critiques of portfolios, and meetings to discuss photography. In 1987, Walters closed Tom Walters Photography studio, but continued his business from home until his death on January 4, 1992. His work is archived at the University of NC at Chapel Hill.
