In 1914, he was involved in a car accident in Rangoon, when he was obliged to swerve in order to avoid hitting a Burmese woman who had stepped out on to the road. The car collided with a tram and was smashed beyond repair. Thomas was flung from the vehicle and landed heavily upon his head on the road. He did not sustain a serious injury although one of his passengers did not fair so well. Fourteen years later, Thomas died suddenly of a stroke. It is possible that these two events are connected.
