Samuel arrived in Australia in January 1871 on the Kirkham from London with wife Ellen and daughters Ellen Elizabeth and Lavinia Louisa. After Ellen passed away in December 1878, Samuel married Sarah Greenwood In 1880. The Argus, Melbourne. 18th December 1910. Mr. Samuel Shergold, the hallkeeper of the Melbourne Athenaeum, has retired after a service extending over nearly 40 years. Mr. Shergold, who has seen the institution grow to its present importance, has been granted 12 months' leave of absence, his retirement thus dating from December 31, 1911.
