John Newton Baker was born on March 16, 1886 in Knox County, Kentucky United States. He married Gladys Pearl Monroe Baker on May 17, 1917 and they later divorced on May 11, 1923. They had children Robert Baker and Berniece Baker. He married Gertrude Ritze Engle in 1910, and they were married until John's death on September 17, 1951. They had a child Jasper Frederick Baker. Jack qualified as a teacher in Victoria, and after teaching for about five years, went to Papua New Guinea in 1951 as a Cadet Patrol Officer. In 1956 he was posted to Okapa, in the Eastern Highlands where he became involved with the team researching the "Kuru" disease, they found out that the tribe called the Fore people as a tradition, cooked and ate their deceased relatives, and some ate the brains containing the neuro degenarative disease, the incubation period being between 10 to 50 years. He met his future wife Lois Larkin during this time, they also spent 12 months in the U.S.A. at the National Institute of Health, in Maryland. In 1971 Jack was promoted to Senior Inspector in the Public Service Commission of PNG during the start of their Independence.
