Joan Christine (Sand) Otto was born on July 15, 1920 to Catharina Sand and Leo Michael Sand, and had siblings Pauline Mary Kruschek, Edmund Clarence Sand, Lucille R Sand, Ervin Herman Sand, Werner Peter Sand, Rembert Alois Sand, Marlene Margaret Benkowski, and Jerome Alphonse Sand. She married James Christian Otto in 1947, and had children Doris Christine McKinnis and Robert Stanley Otto. Joan Otto died at age 95 years old on October 29, 2015.

In 1920, in the year that Joan Christine Otto was born, on January 1, over 6000 people were arrested and put in prison because they were suspected of being communists. . Many had to be released in a few weeks and only 3 guns were found in their homes. The U.S. Department of Justice "red hunt" netted thousands of "radicals" and suspected "communists" and aliens were deported. But the "hunt" ended after Attorney General Palmer forecast a massive radical uprising on May Day and the day passed without incident.

In 1942, at the age of 22 years old, Joan was alive when on November 28th at 10:15p, a nightclub in Boston, the Cocoanut Grove, caught fire. The origins of the fire are unknown but it killed 492 people - the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. Hundreds more were injured. The disaster was so shocking that it replaced World War II in the headlines and lead to reforms in safety standards and codes.
