He was secretly engaged to George's daughter Elizabeth Kersley for 15 years before they finally married. James Bartram was opposed to their relationship possibly due to Elizabeth being part Aboriginal on her maternal line. After his marriage he moved with his wife and three eldest children to Wheatfields in Dumbleyung (a Farm on the edge of Lake Dumbleyung). His father-in-law built him the Wheatfields house to live in. Henry became a leading wheat and sheep farmer in Dumbleyung.
