Edwin Hillyer was a soldier in the United States Civil War. ANGELINE HANNAH COE She married Apr. 4, 1848, Capt. Edwin Hillyer, born in Atwater, Portage Co., Ohio, Sept. 30, 1825, son of Daniel and Charity (Loomis) Hillyer. and their union in wedlock was extended over sixty years. Capt. Hillyer was educated in the public schools and in the academy of Farmington, O. A few months after his marriage the discovery of gold in California lured him thither, and in the Spring of 1849 he went to Sacramento but remained but a year, and returning to Ohio in 1850 he removed with his bride to Waupun, Wis., where they permanently settled and for over a half century he engaged successfully in the fire and life insurance business. His military title was secured in the Civil War when he served as captain of Co. K., 10th Wis. Vols., from Oct. 1861 to Apr. 1862. In 1856 he represented Waupun in the Wisconsin Legislature, and was the leader in securing the abolishment of capital punishment in that State. For many years Capt. Hillyer was a trustee and the treasurer of the Congregational church of Waupun, and was deeply interested in the public library of that place presenting to it over five thousand volumes known as the Edwin Hillyer Library which is now merged in the Carnegie Library of Waupun. Towards the close of his life Capt. Hillyer went to St. Petersburg, Fla., where he died Dec. 8, 1908, in his eighty-fourth year. He was a man of ability and energy, sterling qualities, and high character. For many years Mrs. Hiilyer has been investigating the history of her ancestors and is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Especially interested in her Coe and Spelman lineages, she has rendered valuable assistance in compiling her branches for the genealogies of these two distinguished families. Although in her eighty-fourth year she enjoys excellent health, her faculties are unimpaired, and she continues vigorously active in the duties and pleasures of life. (1911)
