Came to USA at 3-4 years of age. Oldest of 6 girls. Did NOT live on Lower East Side because they were too poor to even afford that. Eventually moved to Brooklyn and raised her family there. Retired to Tamarac, FL. Married to Morris Zimmerman. Had Laura and Carol.
-Augusta was extremely intelligent, and a modern woman/thinker for her day. Recorded vast number of Yiddish books for the blind - and prided herself on having correct Yiddish, knitted avidly, and expressed her feelings through piano (the Romantics, esp. Chopin). Held herself to the highest standards. Hardened by her difficult childhood. Staunchly Democratic. Experienced discrimination as a child, even from her own school teachers. Resented having a "paper father" as a young child, when still living in Poland (in a hut with dirt floors) and her father was in USA working to save up to send for them. When they arrived at Ellis Island, she doned a new coat (a luxury for her), and on her first encounter with her father in the US, he threw the coat into the Hudson River, declaring that it looked too Old World. She never fully forgave him for that.
