4 Anton Krivak Biographies

Here is a letter that Tony wrote to his sister shortly before WWII ended Captain Anton Krivak 0-1011575 Troop E 41 Cav Rcm Sq APO 261 c/o PM NY NY 5 April 1945 Howdy Folks; Still present and accounted for but I'm wondering why. Mom might be interested in knowing that I am only 65 miles from her native land. I may be lucky enough to see it if we head that way. We're right in the middle of Nazi-ism and maybe the Krauts here don't hate our guts. We get a lot of sniper fire but when it gets too bad we back off and burn the town. If you have been reading anything about the 4th armed division just chalk that up to the 11th because they're stealing a lot of credit for things we've done and it's got us pretty well burned up. We're all expecting the war's end daily but guess they don't intend to surrender - we'll just have to occupy all of Germany. Our opposition isn't too bad, once in awhile we run into a hornet's nest but as for we've been able to keep rolling. We're being supplied by air cause our supply lines have been cut off so I don't know whether things are good or bad. We've lucky in that this last smash has thoroughly disorganized the Krauts and they can't mass enough stuff to make it hot for us. Haven't had any mail for 10 days and haven't been able to mail anything back so don't know when you will get this. I can't understand the dumb reasoning of the Krauts but if they want to fight, we'll certainly oblige them. I'd just as soon stay here for awhile longer maybe I could get out of going to China, something I'm strictly not in favor of. 'Cause a man has got just so much luck and then it runs out. Besides, I want to get back and enjoy a little civilian life and start a family. I'm on my 5th year in the army and beginning to feel like an old man, seems like I'm missing the best years of my life with Dell. I guess you gather by now I'm fed up with the army, the war and Krauts, hell knows when it will all end but when it does, I hope I'm still here. I got a letter from Charlie Karavik he's here somewhere and he sounded a little scared in the letter. I wrote him a short letter giving him a couple of tips but he'll just have to learn the hard way like all the rest of us. Mom asked me to bring her some ground from her native land. I wonder if German soil will do in the event I don't get to Moravia. That's it for you folks. See you all in the near future - best of luck Tony
