4 Amanda Meeker Biographies

Amanda Clement Meeker Spinning was born in January 26, 1839 in Ohio to Walter (b. 1803 NH) and Malinda (b. 1813 OH) Clement. Her siblings were Mary b. 1833 OH, Elizabeth b. 1835 OH, Henry b. 1841 OH, and Sarah b. 1849 IA. In 1841 Amanda's family moved to Eddyville, Iowa where she grew up. In April 1852 Oliver Meeker, who was on his way west over the Oregon Trail, stopped in Eddyville to visit his younger brother. Ezra Meeker had been living in Eddyville since October 1851 and had spent the winter working for Amanda's father surveying parts of Iowa. After a stay of two weeks Oliver and Ezra headed west. Two years later Oliver was back in Eddyville where he met his parents, Jacob & Phoebe Meeker, and two of his siblings whom he intended to guide west over the Oregon Trail to Puget Sound. A whirlwind courtship, which has been described as of one day's duration, took place and Amanda and Oliver were married on April 23, 1854. Their honeymoon was a journey over the Oregon Trail and Naches Pass to Puget Sound where they arrived in late October 1854. Amanda and Oliver took a Donation Land Claim in rural Pierce County, but the outbreak of the Puget Sound Indian wars in 1855 drove them to the city of Steilacoom. Here they had their only child, Frank Oliver Meeker, born May 3, 1855. Amanda's husband, in concert with Ezra and Jacob Meeker opened a store in Steilacoom. Oliver also got involved in politics and was elected to the territorial legislature. In January 1860 Oliver Meeker drowned when the steamship Northerner sank off the northern California coast. (Oliver was bringing supplies for the store from San Francisco.) Amanda and her child moved in with her brother-in-law Ezra. In 1862 when Ezra moved his family to Puyallup Amanda and Frank went along. In 1864 Amanda obtained a teaching certificate and taught school in Puyallup. On January 1, 1867 she married Ben "Frank" Spinning in Ezra's Puyallup cabin. She and her new husband moved to Steilacoom while her son remained in Ezra Meeker's household. In 1872 Frank Oliver Meeker went east to attend Cornell University. Frank graduated in the spring of 1878 with a Bachelor of Science and Letters degree, likely becoming the first Washington Territory resident to graduate from an Ivy League college. In 1880 Amanda and Ben were living in Tuolumne County, California. Ben died in 1883. Around 1875 her brother Henry and sister Elizabeth had moved to San Francisco and Berkeley, California and Amanda's widowed mother also made the move from Iowa. Rather than remain in California with her siblings and mother, Amanda, now widowed twice, decided to move back to Puget Sound and live with her son. Interestingly her mother, sister Elizabeth Male and her daughter Mollie followed her north. (Mollie became a Tacoma school teacher.) Amanda remained in Puget Sound until 1894 when Frank and his family moved to Greeley, Colorado. Amanda went along. Around 1908 Frank moved once again, this time to southern Oregon where Amanda lived out her remaining days. Amanda died February 1, 1917 on her son's farm in Holland, Oregon.
