Mother Eugena Taylor, brother Lindbergh Carey, Alicia was a recent 2006 Sheldon High School graduate who moved back to Sacramento after moving to Texas briefly in 2007 with her mother. Just a few days after her return, Ray's body was found at an apartment at 2205 West El Camino Road where she had been staying with a friend. She was posting ads on Craigslist and texting until approx 10pm, texting her friend asking if it was okay for a boy to come over, and that was the last anyone heard of Ray alive. She had been strangled with a USB computer cord and Alicia's remains were flown back to her birthplace to Los Angeles for burial.

On August 10th security guards at the Tarmon Ranch apartment complex reported a fire. Firefighters arrived, put out the fire and discovered the body of Alicia Ray inside an apartment's bedroom. Along with the body, an arson investigator determined that the fire was set on purpose.
An autopsy determined that Alicia died before the fire due to ligature strangulation. A partially used condom was found under Ray's body, and a blue "Rough Rider" condom label were found in the kitchen wrapped in a paper towel. DNA wasn't possible.
Jose Duarte was interviewed by the police and he told the police that he did not kill Alicia, that he had known Alicia for a few years and had a child with his girlfriend, and Alicia was his mistress. He reported that Alicia was stripping for men she met through Craigslist to support herself.
Jose said that he was at the apartment that night of Alicia's death, but left around 12:15 after having relations. He says that as he was leaving the apartment he was a man pull up in a white car and go into Alicia's apartment. After a while, he went into the apartment and says he found Alicia dead and the fire.
Police checked Ray's email and determined that she did have a meeting scheduled with a man named Isaac Utter on the night she died. Utter confirmed that he did respond to Alicia's Craigslist advertisement and he arrived around 11:30pm. Alicia performed a lap dance and other acts, and Isaac put the condom in a paper towel in the kitchen. When Alicia and Isaac were done, Isaac hung around for a little white as Alicia was texting with Jose who was waiting outside.
Police found multiple text and evidence that Jose and Ray were working together. Jose's plan was to setup Alicia Ray a a sex worker, get more girls like her, so that he could get custody of his daughter.
